School hours are 8:05-3:05
- Students have been introduced to two different methods to add numbers, but we are concentrating on the "traditional" method," which is the one with the "carrying" (regrouping) we parents are used to. The "partial sums" method is just the written form of a method many of us adults use to do mental math. Students are not required to use the method. It was only briefly introduced.

Extra practice at home counting change up to $1.00 would be great! This is a challenging skill for many students. Our approach in class is to first use pennies to get to number ending in "5" or "0". Then use nickels and/or dimes to get up to closest "magic number" of 25, 50, or 75. Then zip to the $1.00 with quarters. Finally count the change, by counting larger coins first.
-
Please go over with your children the errors marked on papers sent home. I believe the children learn a lot through this process. These papers are being sent home on a regular basis throughout the week.
-
If your child brings an afternoon snack, please help guide the choice to something "neat" and small.
-
If you would like to pick up make-up work for your child in the event of absence, please e-mail me before lunch time so that I can get this together and have it ready for you on the shelf outside the office at the end of the school day. If you need this on a Friday, an e-mail even earlier would be helpful, since I may have no break after lunch.
-
It is very important that ANY money turned into a school staff member be turned in first thing in the morning. Due to the rules in place for teachers' handling of money, it becomes complicated if either you or your child brings money to me later in the day.
-
IMPORTANT: If your child should have to miss school, even if we have talked and you have let me know your child is sick, it is very important that you send in those excuse notes anyway. If you have a doctor note, definitely send that; otherwise, a parent note. Please do not write these notes in the agendamate, because I am required to send all notes to the office, so that the absences are marked in the county-wide computer system as "excused."
-
Please read with your child each evening and work with addition and subtraction facts up to 9+9 and 18-9. Also practice counting money and telling time.
-
I encourage your child to take home ANY books from their desks or our bookshelves as long as they bring them back each day for classroom use. I do ask that children borrow only one book at a time from our classroom library.
-
Homework assignments for your child to "study" math facts, spelling words, etc. do not require them to bring written work to me the next day. Your signature in the agenda lets me know the work was done and gives your children the freedom to study using whatever method works best for them.
-
Please contact me anytime you have concerns. Outside of school hours, the best phone number to call (or text) is my Verizon cell phone, 667-6241. I may not receive messages on 886-6241 as quickly. Both phones are now wireless; I no longer have a landline.
-
My back-up e-mail address for those times when the HCDE network is undergoing maintenance is kwsimpson2000@yahoo.com.
